I love baking. Even though I always manage to spread flour from one end of my house to the next, it is one of my very favorite things to do! Trouble is, I don’t have much talent in the decorating department. I’m always tinkering around to find super easy ways of decorating cupcakes that still look just as fun as all of the pinterest ones! Not to toot my own horn, but I think I’ve found success with these adorably simple Finding Dory cupcakes! Here is an easy to follow guide to decorating your very own Dory cupcakes.
Step 1: Gather a few decorating items!
When I was at Mchaels, I bought these cute little Wilton Dory icing decorations just for decorating cupcakes. If I wanted to be fancy, I could have made one of fondant or chocolate or modeling chocolate, but the time involved in that was just not on my list of things I wanted to do! So I happily purchased my tiny Dorys, grabbed some Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Baby crackers, some thin crispy cookies, and these Trolli Sour Bright Gummy Octopus candies. I was going to try to make gummy worms into octopuses, but these little babies (that I’ve also found at both Walmart and Michaels) saved the day!
If you’re anything like me and a cupcake decorating hoarder, you might actually have these next few items in your cabinets! A Wilton #5 (or 4 would also be perfect) decorating tip, 2 couplers, 2 disposable piping bags, blue, pink and green food colors (I suggest using the Wilton gel colors,) and white Wilton sugar pearls.
Step 2: Acquire cupcakes and frosting!
I made blue velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, just to keep with the blue sea theme and to make my taste buds happy! To make your cupcake look like the ocean, use blue icing to frost it. For the teeny tiny bit of piping you’ll be doing, you will need a little of that icing dyed pink and green. Just an FYI, Buttercream is much much easier than cream cheese frosting to work with. Use your favorite recipe or google the Wilton buttercream recipe, which is super simple, and you’ll be in business!
Step 3: Frost your cupcakes!
Now would be the time to make your frosting and frost those babies. While making your frosting, set 1/4 of it aside before you dye it blue. Take half of that 1/4 amount you set aside, dye it pink, then dye the other half green. Hang onto these two as they’ll come in handy in a minute.
Now for frosting the cupcakes! Just slap in on there, it doesn’t matter if it is pretty! Why? Because what you’re going to do it take a knife, hold it flat across the top of the frosted cupcake and tap it a few times all over the frosted surface, creating tiny waves on your frosting. Can’t you just feel the ocean breeze? No? Well can you at least smell the sugar?
Step 4: Decorate your cookie!
Take the crispy cookies that you bought earlier, pick the flatest side and frost them nice and flat with the blue frosting. Be sure to use enough icing to avoid crumbs. (Insert the “do as I say, not as I do” here.) Before the frosting hardens, you’ll want to stick a baby goldfish cracker (aka Nemo) about 3/4 of the way to the top of the cookie on the right side. Leave a little room above it because you are going to put in three tiny white pearls above Nemo. Now he looks as if he is saying “blub blub blub,” or perhaps he is learning to speak whale.
Next we’re going to make the seaweed. Remember those decorating bags I mentioned earlier? You’re going to put the green icing into one of those bags and attach the Wilton #4 or 5 tip (whichever you have) to the bottom. On the left side, about 1/4 of the way up the cookie, you’re going to draw seaweed! This will look like three slightly wavy lines, in the shape of a “V” with an extra tall line in the center of it. Now the cookie (and the hardest part) is done! Stick it in the fridge to harden the frosting while you get back to the cupcake.
Step 4: Make your cupcake pretty!
Now that you’ve made a pretty cookie, it is time to make your cupcake pretty! Use some of your white Wilton sugar pearls, maybe some blue sanding sugar as well to decorate the icing waves on your cupcake. Towards the back of the cupcake, use a knife to cut a small horizontal line into the top 1/4 of your cupcake. This will make it easier when the time comes to stick the cookie into the cupcake without breaking it. Don’t cut all the way across the cupcake, and don’t cut all the way to the bottom, just cut a small slit in your cupcake.
Now, stick an octopus on the front left corner of your cupcake. Actually, scratch that. To make him more like Hank from the movie Finding Dory, take your octopus and eat one of his legs. Okay, now put your new septapus on the cupcake. In the middle of the cupcake, put our forgetful little Dory on before she gets lost! Now for one last adventure in piping! Rinse off your Wilton tip and get ready to set up a new decorating bag with the pink icing. On the front right corner, squeeze 3 pink blobs to your desired height. Just hold the decorating bag and tip in one spot and squeeze until the frosting reaches the height you want. I’d say about 1/4 inch is great. What are these blobs supposed to be exactly? A sea anemone? Coral perhaps? Not too sure but they added a little color to an empty corner of the cupcake!
Step 5: Avengers Assemble…your cupcake!
Take the cookies out of the fridge and stick the bottom part of your cookie into the small slit in your cupcake. Push down gently until the bottom of the seaweed meets the top of your waves. There you have it! A pinterest worthy and adorably simple Finding Dory cupcake perfect for your Finding Dory party…or just an uneventful Monday!
